Weekly Wrap Up

I'm late - yet again - with our weekly wrap up! Please click over to read Weird Unsocialized Homeschool's Weekly Wrap-Up post every Friday!

This week was a little bit slow. We found out my dh is getting "indefinitely" laid off next Friday. I've been sort of down and unmotivated this week, to say the least.

Here are some things we did:

Observed 7 crows on an electrical line. Noted their call, color of their beaks and their size in comparison with other black birds, and got a nice show of ruffling feathers due to the wet weather.

Emme always keeps her eyes out while we are driving for birds. We were in a condo subdivision on a super windy, cold, rainy day and she spotted two hawks in a pine tree, probably taking cover. I backed the car up so all the kids could get a look at it, and I realized it was a type of hawk we had not seen before! I utilized the absolutely WONDERFUL What Bird website and found out what we had seen were two Rough Legged Hawks!
(Not my photo)

We see a lot of red-tailed hawks in our area, plus some red-shouldered hawks - but I had not seen a rough-legged hawk until 2 days ago. There are different degrees of coloration (i.e. some don't look this white underneath, they are more marbled with brown) however, the ones we saw were as white as the pic above! (Non-bird lovers, please excuse my excitement)

We had no field trip this week because Emme misbehaved on Thursday and dawdled all day long with her school work.

This brings me to our new subject: The Book of Virtues unit study, wonderfully put together by Shiver Academy. This is an over 900 page resource that you can download for free! We will be starting on the Self-Discipline study on Monday.

We went ahead with our regular schedule in math, vocabulary, grammar, science & nature study, religion (reading in the Bible about Noah and doing a unit study) cursive handwriting, Michigan history, and language.

In American history Em read a book about Harriet Tubman and we are putting together a small booklet about her life.

Em is about 1/2 way through "The Cat Who Went to Heaven" and we are doing the Lesson Pathway for this online.

That is really about it. I made 4 binders to keep her finished work in. One for language arts, one for history, one for the Book of Virtues study, and one for religion. I am bad about not keeping her worksheets! She has a notebook for most subjects, so those will all be kept as well. I'm not having her write inside her workbooks this year.

Oh - Em also did mini pumpkin decorating with paints, sparkles, etc. Crafty.

Next week we have a trip to the apple/pumpkin orchard planned for our field trip! Let's hope the dawdling stops!

It sounds like you had a great week though. That's a great sot of the hawk!

Praying about your husband's job, but God will provide, one way or another.

Love the hawk; I think I've seen a few of the rough-leg hawks here, but we mostly have red-tailed. I've also seen a red-shouldered hawk around here, too. :)
